Understanding the process – how are babies made!!!

When you are watching a Broadway show, the music, the singing, the dancing, and the acting have to come together in a synchronized manner to make the show an excellent one. If one thing is out of sync, it won’t be enjoyable and may even ruin the experience.

Similarly, when it comes to making a baby naturally, you need more than an egg and a sperm, there are other intricate processes that happen within the womb that need to be in sync to create a life. And the bottom line is you and your partner need to be relaxed and further enjoy copulation with one another.

This article will primarily help you understand how babies are made.

It all begins in the woman’s body with the release of an egg/ovum from one of the ovaries into the fallopian tubes. After ovulating the egg has a 24 hours window where it is fertile and after that, it dies out.

During this fertile period, if a woman has intercourse and the sperm are released into the cervix, then they can reach the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. Sperm has a life of 72 hours; therefore, it has to reach the egg in that time. Plus the sperm should reach the egg in its 24-hour fertile period if you want fertilization to take place. It’s a race, and the fastest and strongest sperm will be able to penetrate the egg/ovum and fertilize it.

Once the egg is fertilized, it creates a protective covering around itself, which does not allow any other sperm to penetrate the egg. So, only a single sperm can fertilize an egg.

How babies are made

Once fertilized, the fertilized egg (also known as the zygote) splits into 2 cells. This cell division keeps happening for the next 2-3 days resulting in the creation of a cluster of cells that slowly move and get planted into the womb. This cluster attaches itself to the lining of the uterus, and the cells continue to divide into billions and zillions of new cells. Once this cell division progresses positively, you can say that the woman is pregnant.

This cell division and development will progress for 9 months or on an average of 40–42 weeks, which is the time the baby is ready to be born.
